FILM MARKETING CAMPAIGN

The Brief:

For WB’s Oscar-nominated comic-book drama Joker, starring Joaquin Phoenix (for which he took home the Academy Award for Best Actor), there were numerous obstacles we had to overcome in marketing the film.  While the film depicts the gradual downward spiral of an unstable individual, we wanted to be very careful not to glorify his emotional imbalance or the resultant violence, or do anything that in any way would seem like an endorsement of such behavior by the IMAX brand.  That said, a key part of our strategic approach was to highlight the sophisticated cinematography of the film, not just the intimate up-close moments with the Joker character, but also the sweeping scope and scale of the wide shots of Arthur Fleck’s Gotham City.

The Creative:

Given the somewhat sensitive nature of the film content, we felt a good way to approach the story was to sit down with Director Todd Phillips and DP Lawrence Sher, as well as other BTL crew, to get their take on how they approached the creation of such an unsettling and yet masterful piece of filmmaking.
